Toyota Farm to Table Tour Kick-Off & Buzz Under the Stars show #2

The weekend of July 10th and 11th were incredibly busy at the City Market! Luckily (for once) the weather did cooperate with us and we had sunshine both days. On Saturday, July 10, 2010 - Toyota kicked off their Farm to Table Tour here in Kansas City at the City Market. This was a great tour where chefs from all around the region were paired up with different farmers to do tasting sized portions for free. This was also during the Farmers' Market so it was a busy day for everyone involved.

At the start of a person's journey, they would get a card that they could get stamped at each place where they had a sample of some food. Once you received at least three samples you could go and receive a gift. This gift came in the form of a potted herb of your choice. The treats did not stop there however. After this, you were able to test drive one of many Toyota hybrid vehicles around the River Market area. Once you had completed the test drive, you received a Boos wooden cutting board. There were drawings for trips, show cars and other activities all throughout the River Market.

Here is what The Pitch had to say about the event.

There are some pictures to the left as well. The whole City Market was quite busy!

The very next day we had Buzz Under the Stars #2 with The Dirty Heads, Matisyahu and Sublime with Rome. The weather this Sunday the 11th was looking iffy at the start of the day but cleared right up for a beautiful day and night! Doors opened at about 6:30 and the concert started at 7:30 with a lot more people showing up at the last minute!

Here is what The Pitch had to say about the event.

Again we would like to thank 96.5 The Buzz and AEG Live for the Buzz Under the Stars Series.

For the Toyota event, we of course would have to thank Toyota. Also, again we would have to thank the stars of the show:

Summer at the City Market & Upcoming Events!

What a busy, busy time at the City Market it has already been (and continues to be)!

FARM TO TABLE:

We already kicked off our Farm to Table events with the Flower Frenzy on May 1st and then followed that up with the Saucy Salad Day on June 5th. The Farm to Table events are a great time to bring the whole family down for different activities and give aways. Jack FM and other media come down to help cover the event and jump in on the fun as well. The next one that is coming up is the Twisted Tomato Day on July 3rd.

Planned activities for Twisted Tomato Day include:

8:00 am - 2:00 pm - Friends of the Library Used Book Sale
8:00 am - 2:00 pm - University of Missouri Extension Sampling
9:00 am - 2:00 pm - Children's Activities, Storytelling and Games
10:00 am - 11:30 am - Twisted Tomato Recipe Contest
10:00 am - 12:00 pm 105.1 JACK FM Radio Remote

And of course the whole thing goes during the Farmers' Market normal hours of 6 am - 3pm. Farmers will be on hand with plenty of tomatoes to sell.

CONCERTS:

We also had our first Buzz Under the Stars concert on June 4th in part due to AEG Live and 96.5 the Buzz. This was also a great success. Lots of fans came out to support Weezer, Coheed & Cambria, Manchester Orchestra and American Bang on this hot day.

We have announced the next two Buzz Under the Stars shows:

Up first will be -

Sunday, July 11th with:

The Dirty Heads

Matisyahu

and headliner Sublime with Rome

Tickets may be purchased via Ticketmaster or by calling 800-745-3000. You may also purchase tickets at The Midland at their box office up until the day of the show without a convenience fee.

Tickets are $35 and the doors open at 6:30 for this all ages show.

The next show after that is:

Friday, July 23rd -

Again, thanks to AEG Live and 96.5 the Buzz we are proud to bring you:

Crash Kings

Against Me!

DEVO

Silversun Pickups

and headliner Ben Folds

Tickets are $35 and the doors open at 6:00 for this all ages show. Thanks to AEG Live & 96.5 The Buzz for making this possible.

1st Fridays:

For the first time the stores on the south end of the Steamboat Arabia building are gathering together artists on Friday, July 2nd from 4pm to 8pm in the south glass walkway. They will be displaying oil paintings, pastels, stained glass and other items. For more information, please visit our The City Market - Kansas City Facebook page and click on the events tab. This event is being put on by Emblazon Cards & Gifts, The Eclectic Leopard, The Urban Trader, Dutch Flowers & The Portrait Studio. For more information about this particular event, please contact Allen Phillips from the Portrait Studio at 816-298-8355.

CITY MARKET CINEMAS:

We kicked off our City Market Cinemas series to an incredible success despite the heat and humidity that had started early in the season. We had an estimated 500-600 people show up to our first show Ferris Bueller's Day Off! This is great considering if history repeats itself, each show continues to build in numbers. Last year, our first show just had about 150 people in attendance so we can only imagine how many people will show up to our next show, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds on Friday, July 30th. The last show (always the big finale) is of course The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Friday, August 27th.

All shows are in The City Market Park at 3rd and Main (behind the west shops of the City Market Square) and all are open to the public & FREE! Come early for raffles and to either dine at your favorite City Market restaurants or to grill out. This (as compared to concerts) is a time when you can bring drinks (plastic please), food, blankets & chairs. We just request to pick up after yourself.

We would like to thank our raffle donors for our first show:

Antonio's Pizzeria

Baby Cakes

The Steamboat Arabia Museum

The Urban Trader - 816.471.2241

Thirsty's Cantina - 816.221.9500

Planter's Seed & Spice Company

This is a great way to get your name out to a large amount of people with a generous donation. Last year alone, Rocky Horror brought in 800 people! At this rate, with us starting off at 500 people - who knows how many will show up. If you would like to promote your business via donation, please let us know at least a week prior to the show by contacting Anthony Butler at the City Market at abutler@cwbkc.com or 816.842.1271

2010 KC RIVERFEST:

While this is not a City Market event, this does happen in the immediate area and therefore does definitely boost traffic! It is a great way to end a day at the City Market and River Market area. Spend the 4th of July down at Richard Berkley Park by watching a great 4th of July show at KC Riverfest Go to their website for more information. This takes place July 3rd and 4th.

TOYOTA FARM TO TABLE SERIES:

On Saturday, July 10th from 10 am to 3 pm, free to the public & during the Farmers' Market we will be proud to kick-off the Toyota Prius Farm to Table Tour for 2010.

This event showcases some of the most recognizable names in the local restaurant scene. The City Market is proud to be the starting location for the 2010 Toyota Farm to Table Tour. This tour travels to farmers' markets across the country to showcase the connection between farmers, chefs, farmers' markets and communities they serve.

DOG POLICY AT THE CITY MARKET PARK & CITY MARKET:

Please note that due to a city ordinance the City Market rules concerning dogs are as follows:

Within the City Market Square, pavilions, tenant walkways, stores & offices dogs are not allowed at all times. This is to maintain the health & safety of food products and for Market patrons. This includes dogs being held by hand as well. Dogs serving in official ADA capacity are exempt from this policy.

In the City Market Park please remember that dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Also, please remember that it is the owners' responsibility to clean up after their dog as well. For your convenience, waste stations are provided in the park. If bags are unavailable, please provide your own. While we strive to provide the convenient service of keeping bags stocked at all times, it is a good idea to bring some with you just in case. This is so the entire public may enjoy the City Market Park.

Thank You!

Farmers' Market weekend of May 23rd

Hello again! We had a great weekend here at the City Market during the week ending May 23rd, 2010. The market was very full both days with vendors and we had the triumphant return of produce as well after a long tough winter. It was especially nice to see all the vendors and customers back after many weeks of rainy weather as well. On Saturday there were vendors selling everything from breakfast items, hand crafted butterfly costumes for kids to college decorated items and sweets. Pictures of this beautiful weekend can be found to the left hand side.

We also had a very busy Community Yard Sale (Sunday) early this season. We were already up to two sheds being used for the Farmers' Market and 60 spaces for the Yard Sale. With only a few more available, we have decided that each person may only get two spaces at a time in order to be fair to everyone. Next weekend should be even busier due to the addition of a K.C. Vintage Thunderbirds Club.

We are also looking forward to a great holiday weekend ahead and the festive weekend after that as well. For the Memorial Day weekend, there will be side-walk sales as well as special store and Farmers' Market sales. Those sales were announced via e-blast and Facebook. For the weekend of June 4-6, there are a lot of activities both here at the City Market and in the River Market / downtown area as a whole. For starters, as previously mentioned, we have the first Buzz Under the Stars show going on Friday, June 4th with American Bang, Manchester Orchestra, Coheed & Cambria, American Bang and Weezer. Tickets are still available via Ticketmaster or by going to The Midland up until the day of the show. The show starts at 6:00 pm and tickets are $35.00. Visit our website for more information. Then that next day we have our Saucy Salad Day from 9-2. It will have kids activities and a salad contest. Check our website for details.

In the general area, the Gay Pride Festival was moved down to Richard Berkley Park for the entire week and weekend of the 6th. The Port Authority and Mark Funkhouser made this announcement on the 21st. There will be a little higher traffic on that Saturday and Sunday but otherwise the additional influx of people should not impact the concert or other events. Another event in the area is The Urban Tour. This year it will take place June 5th and 6th. It is once again a time for people to come down to the Crossroads, Downtown and River Market area and see why people really do like living in this area. Visit the Downtown Council website for more information.

That is it for now and we will see you at the City Market!

Flower Frenzy & Upcoming Events

Saturday May 1st, from 9 am to 2 pm, the City Market hosted a Flower Frenzy Festival as part of the Farm to Table Festival Series. The Flower Frenzy was an event where the greenhouses got a chance to shine. People were especially encouraged to come out to check out what they had to offer and ask questions about what to plant for the season.

For the kids, there were some fun activities as well. There was a flower toss, a flower pot seed spit and a flower frisbee game. We partnered with 105.1 Jack FM between 10 am and 12 pm. Kids planted seeds, made bookmarks with flower petals and created paper flowers. Wonderscope Children's Museum provided kids' activities and Mother Nature was on hand for storytelling. The Agriculture Hall of Fame was at the City Market as well. Freebies to the first 250 people were wildflower seed packets which had the Farm to Table Festival dates listed on the back.

Farmers' Market & Broadway Bridge Run

Saturday, April 17th was a great weekend at the Farmers' Market with the Barrel Train making a great run for the kids. It is a colorful ride for the kids to enjoy on a nice spring day. This particular Saturday also brought out the greenhouse vendors ahead of our much anticipated Farm to Table Festival Series kick off - the Flower Frenzy! All sorts of flowers and flower beds were on display as seen to the left. There were plenty of arts and craft vendors as well.

The Broadway Bridge Run came back this year to the City Market. 1,141 runners participated in this event which benefited the Special Olympics of Kansas City Missouri. Some pictures of this event may also be found to the left as well as by clicking here: Broadway Bridge Run. The event raised $53,956.

Until next time - see you at the City Market!

NAPMM Award & Kansas City City Council Resolution

Deb Churchill, Property Manager for the City Market, attended the National Association of Produce Market Managers conference in Dallas, Texas towards the last week of March. This event happens every year at a different market. Also at each conference, a Market Manager receives an award for being the manager of the year.

This year Deb was recognized for her commitment to the City Market and hard work. Not only did she receive the award but she also was recognized by the Kansas City City Council. On Thursday, April 15th, the City Council showed their support with a City Council Resolution. Click here to read the Resolution honoring Deb and all her hard work for the City Market: City Council Resolution. Congratulations to Deb Churchill!

Get Your Green On & Community Yard Sale Kick-Off

Saturday, April 10th was a great Farmers' Market day down here at the City Market. We had vendors starting to return after a harsh winter and we also had our 2nd recycling event called Get Your Green On. This was an event where people could come down and turn in used electronic devices to be recycled. We partnered with the Surplus Exchange for this event and it went great. They are continuing to do some more events over the next few weeks as well. Everyone can learn more from: The Surplus Exchange Website. We also hope people took advantage of our other recycling opportunities here on our property (they are here all the time). One is our paper recycling bin and the other is our Ripple Glass bin ( The Ripple Glass Website) which are both located in our east lot at 3rd and Grand. We just ask that people get their glass all the way into the glass bin and just put paper in the paper bin. Please, no cardboard in the paper recycling bin. Thanks!

There was one other item of note from Saturday. A wild turkey found his way onto the property. We are thinking it may have flown over from the river. He seemed a little confused as to where to go or what to do! Perhaps he wanted to shop. Well, he wanted some lunch and wandered into one of the restaurants. He was peacefully escorted away and was let go back into the wild. Just proof that you never know what might happen down here. He was a big boy as you can see to the left.

On Sunday the 11th we kicked off our Community Yard Sale. This is designed to be an opportunity for people to clean out their closets and sell gently used items to the public for a small fee. 10 X 10 spaces go for $15 a piece and you may rent tables for $5 a piece if needed. People were lined up bright and early for the 6 am - 8:30 am check-in. We rented 42 stalls that day! Not bad for a start of the season! We have some pictures of the event to the left. Here are a couple links to news stories about the event as well: News story #1, News story #2. The Yard Sale does occur all year long however because we move people into the glass pavilions when it gets cold. Here is a booklet with all the rules, regulations and fees for the Community Yard Sale (category 8). Just fill out the application and call in the week that you are going to participate. The Farmers’ Market 2010 Vendor Handbook

Also for Sundays, we are gaining momentum as far as stalls for Farmers go. Make sure that if you are not able to stop by on a Saturday to come by on a Sunday. The Farmers' Market goes from 8 am - 3pm. This upcoming Sunday the 18th will be the Broadway Bridge Run. Come down to see the runners go by and shop the City Market. If you are interested in being a Farmers' Market vendor and have noticed that Saturdays are full, keep in mind we still have room on Sundays. Click on the link above for a handbook to see if what you are looking to sell fits the criteria for what we allow here at the City Market. More information can be found inside.

About this blog

Hello and welcome to the City Market blog! The purpose of this blog is to give a little more insight into the City Market and the activities that take place in the City Market and the River Market area as a whole. The City Market is part of the birthplace of Kansas City so it is a good idea to continue to document what goes on in the heart of Kansas City.

This should be a good spot for details about upcoming events, wrap-up stories, pictures of activities in the area, information on area businesses and other related information. There is a long standing tradition of archiving what has happened in this part of town and we want to make sure that continues both in pictures and in writing. We also want to make sure the community is involved, so feel free to ask questions or make comments.

We have also added other sections including polls for people to participate in, historical and modern day pictures, the news of today (via AP Twitter feed), the River Market Community Association Twitter feed and our own Twitter feed.

We hope to add as much as possible to this and hopefully it is a useful resource as well. We will add links that will be handy whenever possible. Thank you and enjoy! For more information, please visit our website at The City Market Website. You may also read more about the Farmers' Market at the Farmers' Market blog by clicking here: The Farmers' Market blog.
